I'm Bored on a Cruise

I have friends who have expressed concern that they will get bored on a cruise, especially one with “too many” sea days.  Will you get bored on a cruise and how many is too many sea days?  I’m so enamored with cruising and all of the possibilities for different personalities, I wonder if boredom on a seven day cruise is possible.  As with any vacation on land, personal preferences determine how active you want to be and what is fun for you.  Before we discuss the activities on board a cruise ship, let’s think about what you like to do on vacation be it on land or at sea.

·       Do you want to be entertained, or do you prefer activities where you are active?

·       Would you prefer to socialize with people, or is peaceful solitude your ideal?

·       How long are you happy traveling away from home?

Your answers to these questions will help identify the type of activities and location you prefer on vacation.  It may be that the concern over boredom on a cruise would be the same for any other travel destination.  Determine what you would like to do for recreation and fun, and then see if cruising is a match.  There are so many different types of cruise experiences that you can find one to fit you.

So, what type of activities will you find on board?  Let’s focus on the major cruise lines and larger ships, here is a list of options from our last few cruises.

Every major cruise line will have at least half of these activities, and possibly all, available every sea day and most on port days as well.  If there are not enough options for you in this list, I have another one for you; join a roll call for your cruise.  You can find a group of new and experienced cruisers sharing ideas and planning onboard activities for almost every cruise.  Check out the roll calls on Cruise Critic and you may find that the group is using a closed group on Facebook for most communication.  Some roll calls are more active than others and the list of activities is unique to each group.  Here are some of the activities I have participated in with roll call groups on different cruise lines.

If you are still concerned that there are not enough options for a seven day cruise with three ports, please comment below and share what you do on a land vacation that does not bore you.  It may be that cruising is not for you, or you may not have found the right style of cruising.  I would like to help.  Leave a comment or you can find me on Twitter and Instagram.
